The Appaloosa Trading Company is a well-established shop in Telluride, but with a recent move to a new location, the business is utilizing the additional space for much more than retail.

Combining retail, food service and even a bar in an expansive space on 100 Colorado W. Avenue that used to house the Llama restaurant and bar, Appaloosa’s owner Michael Gibson said he thinks he can carve a new niche into the Telluride marketplace. “We’ve taken a restaurant that’s been here for many, many years and kind of transformed it, combining the Appaloosa Trading Company boutique with the café, bar and restaurant, Gibson said. “This hasn’t been done very much, but we think it adds a new dimension to town for the tourists, second homeowners and everybody else.”

Appaloosa is based in Durango and has operated a branch in Telluride for around seven years. The company sells a variety of Hand Engraved Silver and Hand Carved Leather items which they design and make. Also, clothing, jewelry and many other other items. Though Gibson, who is from Boulder, doesn’t make everything himself, he said he controls the quality of his entire inventory and offers many unique items at all of his stores.

Gibson has been working with leather since he was 12 years old. He opened Appaloosa in Durango 30 years ago, and has been expanding the company ever since.

“Wherever I’ve lived I’ve always done leather work,” Gibson said, “It’s what I do.”

The idea behind expanding to Telluride was to take advantage of the winter season, but it turned out the summer season was strong as well. Gibson said during the seven years since the company moved to Telluride, Appaloosa has developed a good following, which he hopes will enjoy the new format.

The company moved to expand its offerings because at its old storefront location across the street were space was limited and so possibilities for the branch.

Though Gibson expects things to evolve as time goes on,he wants to offer different events through the restaurant. One option is offering the building’s private dinning area to host group events. All food in the restaurant is made fresh on site, including all salad dressings and sauces.

Though the restaurant-café-retail shop format might be new to Telluride, Gibson said it has been done in Aspen as well as on the East and West coasts.

“We just wanted a destination for our customers and locals too,” Gibson said. “I feel we’re providing something new and different for the locals with a price that’s reasonable. I’d also like to thank Richard Groman, who owns the building because he really helped us out a lot.”
